For Independent RIAs · No Fee to Start
RIA Recruiters for Every Seat
an Independent Firm Needs to Fill.
Advisors and planners, client service and operations, compliance, and the COO who runs it all. Nothing to start a search. You pay 25% of first-year OTE when you hire someone we introduced.
The Short Answer
What an RIA Recruiter Does That a Job Post Cannot
An RIA recruiter finds, screens and introduces the people an independent advisory firm hires, most of whom are not looking for a job, and stays with the hire through the offer and the start date. A job post reaches the people who are already looking. A recruiter reaches everyone else.
Everyone else is most of the market. Of the 1,441 recorded screening calls in the first half of 2026, 71% were with someone passively open or not looking at all. Among the advisors we placed, 78% were not looking when we first reached them. Job posts still produce good hires; a search built only on applicants is searching the minority of the people worth hiring. See our passive advisor candidates benchmark.
We have recruited only for wealth management firms since November 2023 and have served 154+ of them. This page is about the RIA as the buyer, every seat it hires. For advisor and planner searches in depth, see our financial advisor recruiters page; for the wider picture, our wealth management recruiters page.
RIA Roles
The Seats Our RIA Recruiters Fill
Client service associate to CEO, advisors included. Each seat is hard for a different reason.
Lead and Senior Advisors
The hire has to bring client judgment and fit a firm that may be a fraction the size of where they are now. See financial advisor recruiters.
Associate Advisors
The firm needs a defined growth path before the search starts, or strong associates will not take the call. See hiring a junior advisor.
Paraplanners
Technical planning depth, and how cleanly they hand work to the advisor who owns the client.
Client Service Associates
Often the first hire at a small RIA, and the one that gives the advisor back their week. See when to hire operations staff first.
Operations and Trading
A narrow skill set. A $2B Minneapolis RIA filled its Portfolio Trading Specialist seat from two candidates presented, in under four weeks.
Compliance
Compliance officers sit in our leadership searches. See compliance basics before your first hire.
COO, President, Head of Advice
The seats that run the firm, filled through Retained Executive Search. Recent COO placements: Las Vegas, Sacramento and Phoenix. See executive search.
Sequencing
The Order RIAs Usually Hire In
The typical sequence, as our guide to the right order to hire as an RIA scales sets it out: operations support first, then a service or associate advisor, then a second producing advisor, then more operations capacity and a junior advisor pipeline. Hiring an advisor before the firm has operational bandwidth usually creates a bottleneck instead of new revenue. Leadership comes when the firm needs someone to run it.
The first support hire is the one that moves the numbers. Per Kitces Research's 2026 advisor-productivity study, as printed in our Talent Report, a solo advisor with no support averages about $234,000 in annual revenue. Add one support professional, roughly $100,000 fully loaded, and that rises to about $500,000. A full team runs about $1.16 million, nearly five times the solo figure.

Firm Size
RIA Recruiting for Small and Growing Firms
Most of our record comes from the smaller end of the market, where hiring is least formal. Of the 129 client firms in the first half of 2026 record, 75% managed under $1 billion, 18% managed $1 billion to $10 billion, and 7% managed more. 35% of them came back for more than one search.
A one-advisor firm's first hire is often the hardest search it will run: there is no playbook, no HR function and no one else to cover clients while the founder interviews. That is the search a recruiter earns its fee on. Start with our guides to the one-person RIA's first hire and the first outside advisor hire, and see how small RIAs compete for advisor talent.
Process and Timing
How an RIA Search Runs, and How Long It Takes
A one to two hour discovery call with your leadership. Matching Vault candidates shortlisted within 24 hours of kickoff, and outreach to passive candidates within 48 hours. Every candidate screened on video before your calendar is touched. Introductions with a written brief on each. Then offer support, counter-offer prep and resignation coaching through the start date.
The 16 days is the median from kickoff to introducing the candidate who was ultimately hired, across our last 20 to 30 completed searches. Speed matters for a reason: in 43% of the searches in our first half 2026 record that did not close, the candidate walked away, not the firm. The fastest search in that record, per The RIA Talent Report, filled a chief operating officer seat in under a week. More in our benchmark on how long it takes to hire a financial advisor.
Published Fees
What RIA Recruiting Costs
Nothing to start. The placement fee is 25% of first-year OTE, due when your hire accepts, and role minimums apply. If the search is still open at 60 days and you choose to continue, a $5,000 continuation fee is credited against the placement fee. The fee drops 20% when you extend an offer within 14 days of our introduction, it is accepted within 10 days and the hire starts within 30, in the first 120 days of a search.
A $180,000 Role
Placement fee at 25%
$45,000, due when the candidate accepts. Any continuation fee already paid is credited against it.
The Same Role, Moving Fast
With the 20% reduction
$36,000, when the offer, acceptance and start land inside the 14, 10 and 30 day windows.
RIAs making four or more hires a year can move to ScaleWell. The full terms are on our pricing page, and our guide to the cost of hiring a financial advisor covers the whole cost of a hire, not just the fee.
Your Options
RIA Recruiters, Custodian Programs and Job Boards
A recruiter is one of several ways to fill an RIA seat, and for some seats it is not the right one. Here is how the common options work.
| Option | Who pays, and when | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contingency RIA recruiter (The Well) | The firm, when the hire accepts; nothing to start | A sourced, screened and introduced short list, and support through the start date | Advisor, operations and leadership seats where the right person is not looking |
| Fixed-fee staff search | The firm, a set fee per role | A defined search for a staff seat at a known cost | A staff hire on a fixed budget |
| Custodian talent programs | Usually free to the custodian's client firms | Resources, job boards and campus reach rather than a run search | Firms that custody there and need reach more than a search |
| Planner job boards (FPA, NAPFA, CFP Board) | The firm, a posting fee | Applicants you screen yourself | Seats with a deep pool of active applicants |

Straight Answers
Questions RIA Owners Ask About RIA Recruiters
What does an RIA recruiter do?
Finds, screens and introduces candidates for independent advisory firms, including the people who are not job hunting, and runs the offer through to the start date.
How do I recruit great people for my RIA?
Decide the role before you post it. Go to the people who are not looking: 71% of the candidates in our recorded screening calls were not actively job hunting. Move from introduction to offer inside two weeks, because the candidate ended 43% of the searches that did not close. And price to the person rather than a posted range: 47% of advisor hires in our record closed below the posted floor.
Does the firm or the candidate pay an RIA recruiter?
At The Well, the hiring firm pays. Candidates never pay us a dollar, and a candidate's name is shared only with their permission and only with a firm that has signed a search agreement with us.
How much does an RIA recruiter cost?
At The Well, nothing to start and 25% of first-year OTE when the hire accepts, with a 20% reduction for a fast offer, acceptance and start. Our guide to the cost of hiring a financial advisor compares the other fee models.
How long does it take to fill an RIA role?
Our median is 48 days from signed search to accepted offer. The fastest search in the first half 2026 record behind The RIA Talent Report filled a COO seat in under a week.
Do you recruit operations and client service staff, or only advisors?
Client service associate to CEO, advisors included: client service, paraplanning, operations, trading, compliance and leadership.
Can our custodian help us hire?
Some custodians run talent programs for the firms they serve, with resources, job boards and campus reach. That can be enough for a seat with plenty of active applicants. For a seat where the right person is not looking, a run search is the better tool.
Do you work with RIAs under $500M?
Yes. 75% of the client firms in our first half 2026 record managed under $1 billion, and our case studies include a four-person, roughly $500M Dallas RIA.
